In Hazardous areas, conventional lighting products cannot be used, due to numerous factors, two of which are safety concerns, and a lack of access for engineer maintenance. Common applications of the below luminaires include exposed outdoor locations, emergency areas like fire exits and escape routes, and engine rooms/compressor rooms in the machinery spaces. Thanks to their wide range of operating conditions, hazardous area lighting and electrical equipment is often taken advantage of in locations where there is a high temperature range or frequent sub-zero weather conditions.

In Zone 1 hazardous areas aboard ships, the risk of potentially explosive atmospheres is present under normal operating conditions. These areas typically include locations where flammable gases, vapors, or liquids may be present in sufficient quantities to ignite. Examples of Zone 1 areas on ships may include engine rooms, fuel storage areas, and certain cargo holds. Lighting fixtures installed in Zone 1 must meet stringent safety standards to prevent ignition sources and minimize the risk of explosion. These fixtures are designed with features such as sealed enclosures, robust construction, and intrinsically safe electrical components to ensure safe operation in hazardous environments.

Zone 2 hazardous areas on ships pose a lower risk of explosive atmospheres compared to Zone 1 but still require caution and specific lighting solutions. In Zone 2 areas, the presence of flammable substances is possible but less likely to occur under normal operating conditions. Examples of Zone 2 areas on ships may include certain deck areas, storage rooms, and accommodation spaces. While the risk level is lower in Zone 2, lighting fixtures installed in these areas must still adhere to safety standards to mitigate the risk of ignition and ensure safe operation. These fixtures may incorporate features such as increased ingress protection, rugged construction, and limited energy output to minimize the potential for sparking or overheating.
